DESCRIPTION

Splitting the Lines Pattern

Objective: Build from the back by playing through the lines, progressing the ball with precise passes and coordinated movement. The focus is on splitting the opponent’s midfield and creating attacking opportunities using the full-back, striker, and central attacking mid.

Pattern Overview:

  1. The ball starts with the goalkeeper, who plays it to the center-back.
  2. The center-back progresses the ball into the right or left attacking midfielder (RAM or LAM).
  3. The attacking midfielder returns the ball to the holding midfielder (HM) on their side to recycle and shift play.
  4. The holding midfielder releases the ball to the full-back, who makes a forward run.
  5. The full-back then has two options:
  • Deliver a cross or through ball to the striker.
  • Play into the central attacking midfielder (CAM) for combination play in the final third.
  1. The team moves as a unit up the field, compressing space and staying compact.

COACHING POINTS

Coaching Points

  1. Passing Precision:
  • Passes from the center-back to the attacking midfielder must be firm and to the correct foot to allow a quick layoff.
  • The holding midfielder should focus on clean, decisive passes to release the full-back.
  1. Movement Off the Ball:
  • The full-back must time their forward run to arrive just as the holding midfielder is ready to pass.
  • The striker and CAM should adjust their positions to stay available for the full-back’s delivery.
  1. Team Compactness:
  • Encourage the team to move forward as a unit to maintain pressure and offer support if possession is lost.
  • Midfielders should stay close enough to the ball to recycle possession quickly.

Practice Focus

  • Use small-sided drills to emphasize timing and precision for each pass in the sequence.
  • Progress to full-field setups, ensuring players understand their roles and movements in real-time.
  • Add defenders gradually to replicate game scenarios and reinforce splitting the lines under pressure.

This pattern combines strategic buildup with fluidity, keeping the opponent guessing while progressing the ball effectively.
