Markers on the floor for fielders to stand on, should be 3 metres from the batsman. Be strict on this point - safety.3. Mark out the target area for feeder to aim at for the back foot defence.4. Ideal number for each group is 4-5 players -maximun activity5. Feeder kneels 7-10 paces from the batsman.6. Feeder says \"Bat Up!\", then feeds a dart feed, standing up, throwing from head height downwards. The ball should be aimned to bounce once and between the batsman's waist and chest height.7. Each group has 3 balls.8. Ideal duration of practice: 20-30 mins.

The quick singles game

This game can be played in teams (6-10 a-side) or in pairs (8-10 players). Rules of the game: There should be a batter at both ends. If playing in pairs, give each pair two or three wickets. If playing in teams, when a wicket falls it is the turn of the next batsman. Tip and run, or two or three balls to make a run. The coach throws either all front foot defence or all back foot defence bowls. The fielders must stay on the cones or with one hand on the wall until the ball is thrown, otherwise batsmen automatically get a two run bonus. Ways of getting out: Bowled, caught, run out, stumped, playing an attacking shot, or failing to score off the limited number of deliveries. The batsman can only score singles but the boundaries count for overthrows. Overthrows: side walls = 2 runs, back wall behind wicket keeper = 1 run, front wall = 4 runs (Unless you hit a 4 you can run singles to add to the side and back wall scores.) If a batsman leaves the ball it does not count and he does not have to run. If the batsman plays and misses it counts as a delivery

<BR>Set the practice up as shown.Each player has 8-10 balls, then all rotate clockwise.The coach calls bat up before feeding the ball for the batsman to drive the ball through the v shaped cones.If the batsman leaves the ball they get another ball. If they play and miss they do not. If players deliberately play cross-batted shots on leg side they lose that round. (Be strict on this point).If players hit the ball into the air, over the fielders, it does not count and they lose that ball. Make the last round competitive: who can hit all balls through target area along the ground? Fielders must stop the ball. On the competitive round, if a player gets out, all change round.<BR>

<br />For groups of 3-6 people, with one player feeding. Feeder delivers 20 good feeds over arm, or until he gets a player out.<br />Each Batter has 3-4 deliveries then they run to back of que and rotate around.<br /><br />Competition: The batter can choose to leave the ball or defend it through cones. If the ball goes into the air the batter is out. If you defend and hit the ball back through the cones you can call \&quot;YES\&quot; and run. If the ball doesnt go through the cones then you stay in batting unitl out of goes. (Target of 30 runs per group)

Dip your head and shoulder more than for the off or straight drive and let the ball come through. Open your leading shoulder to point straight/ mid on, so that your hip opens slightly, allowing the bat to swing through. Take a short stride towards the ball, stand tall on the balls of your feet and point the toe of front foot directly up the wicket. Plant foot down the line of leg stump - no wider. Stand tall, get up onto your toes with the weight on your front foot and head forwards, directly above body - eyes level. As the bat swings through the line of the ball, work hard to maintain the following: A dominant top hand, relaxed fingers and thumb bottom hand grip, diamond shape with arms, high hands, hands forward of bat face on impact.

Front Foot Defensive Extras - ...

The defensive stroke should be played to a ball of good line and length. Players stand in a relaxed and balanced stance, head and eyes level. Back swing and step forward to meet the ball. As they prepare to strike the ball the front shoulder dips and the front knee bends. Shoulders rotate vertically and the bat decelerates on contact. The back heel should be raised to help get above the ball and players' bottom hand should be relaxed to avoid over hitting the ball.

<BR>Set up for the practice<br>1. Set up the practice as shown in the diagram.<br>2. Target area: 10 metres away from the batsman - safety.<BR>3. Target area 10-15 metres wide. Fielders stand between markers.NOTE: For better players target area should be further away and more narrow.<BR>4. Mark out parallel lines on the floor to show line and length of the ball.<BR>5. Ideal numbers for groups is 4-6 players - Maximum activity.<br>6. Thrower stands 10-12 paces from the batsman.<BR>7. Thrower says Bat up!, then throws a bobble ball, which bounces more than twice below the batsmans knee height. (Underarm feed standing up.)<BR>8. Each group has 3 balls.<BR>9. Ideal duration of the practice: 25-35 mins.

<br />Organisation: Divide the group into groups of 5. Organise the group as shown in the diagram. The server serves the ball overarm from a kneeling position onto target, after batter shouts 'ready'. The target to be bowled at is positioned in line with middle stump 2-3 metres in front of batter. A wicket keeper is placed behind the batter not too close to the batter.<br /><br />Equipment: 1 tennis ball and 1 bat per group. 2 marker cones. Chalk marking.

(ii) Front or back foot<br /> (d) Underarm Leg Spin - Front of back foot (e) Dart Feed Off Break (give the ball air) - front or back foot <br /> Use any of these feeding progressions, starting with the easier ones.

Create a V-Shaped area out in front of the batter. Working in groups of 6 players take it in turns to bowl, field and bat. The batsman aims to strike the ball beyond the fielders using a front foot drive. The fielders must prevent the ball from getting past them. Every time the batsman gets the ball beyond the fielders, within the coned are, they score a point.

Coach or partner feeds the ball.They will feed the batsman a total of 4 balls and alternate between a low full toss and a waist height full toss.The batsman will drive the low full toss and pull the waist height feed.After every shot, the batsman should advance down the wicket towards the feeder, ready for the next delivery.

Cricket: The front foot drivin...

Teams of 6-8 a side are split into two teams; batsmen and fielders. Each batsman has 6 balls to score as many runs as possible within the coned area only. If they are out they lose their runs and score -4 runs. When all the batsmen have batted they switch to fielding. If a batsman is not out they return to the back of the queue of the waiting batsman. The batting team bats until all the batsman are out.

Short Ball Practice Front foot...

Can be done in pairs/ groups of three. One batter and one feeder minimum required, with 6 tennis balls per pair/group. Each batter should be wearing a minimum of helmet and gloves on. This drill is designed to improve player's confidence against the short ball. Feeds should range from heights 1,2 and 3, and each batter should have 10 feeds before swapping over. Feeds are from a close range, under arm feed, without bouncing, from a kneeling position. The batter should be encouraged to learn to defend and/or evade at first, gaining confidence and getting them in a better position than before to attack after.

Batsman stands with an exaggerated open stance.On contact with the ball the batsman is to get into position for the drive and step into where the shot should go. Alternate between the exaggerated, open stance and the batsmans normal stance.

The Straight Drive Front foot ...

Divide the group into groups of 4 and organise as shown in the diagram. Player (1) drives the ball off the tee at the target. If the distance is more than 11 metres players (2) and (3) attempt to stop the ball and return it to player (4) who replaces the tee and ball. Players rotate roles after 5 attempts. If the distance is less than 11 metres players (2) and (3) remain behind the batter and collect rebound from the wall. Equipment: 1 bat, tennis ball and tee per group. 2 marker cones and chalked lines.

In pairs, one player with a football feeding and one with a bat in their stance. Feeder to throw the ball out slightly in front of the batter and high enough for them to header it. Batter to return the ball with a header, with the head leading the player should be automatically stepping into the header.

<br />Organisation: Organise the group as shown. Batsman plays the ball defensively only when it is going to hit the stumps.<br />1 point is given for every successful call of leave.<br />5 points are deducted if ball hits the stumps.<br />2 points are deducted if batsman plays the ball so softly that it does not roll beyond the line drawn 4 metres from the wicket.<br />Groups rotate after 5 attempts each. Winner is the one with the most points.<br />Safety: No attacking shots. Aim to defend the ball back between the cones and if you leave the ball you can have another ball.<br />N.B. An overarm throw will be necessary for this practice.<br /><br />Equipment: 1 bat and 1 tennis ball per group. 1 set of stumps. Chalk markings / Cones

Set up 3 different coloured cones midway down the wicket going across. From a bobble feed. Hit the ball and hold the shape whilst taking steps in the line of the shot till the cones are met. Players to have 2 shots each before rotating. Once players have a feel for it, move on to the progression- calling the colour of the cone.

Played to a ball short of a length, roughly stump high. Batsman should have a relaxed and balanced stance - head still, eyes level. Back swing and step back. Their front shoulder should then dip. With the base established, weight stays slightly forward. Shoulders rotate vertically, front leg drawn back, alongside the back foot. Bat decelerates, &lsquo;soft hands&rsquo; upon impact. Ball contact under eyes.

Important - no fielders within the target area. Batsman stands at least 8 metres from the wall.<br /><br />Outside or in a large sports hall<br />Fielders stand within the target area. At least 15 metres from the batsman.

Similar to the forward defense, this shot is played when the batter feels a good ball has been bowled and no runs can be scored from it.A good defense is needed for batters to bat for long periods and to score runs.

Back Foot Defence Techniques -...

If the ball is pitched on the stumps - but short of a good length - it needs to be played safely. Going forward to a delivery like this is dangerous and you will also increase the chance of getting out. Going back on your crease and meeting the ball at the top of its bounce will help you to be in full control of the shot. Also, try to meet the ball with soft hands. This means relaxing your hands on the bat handle, which helps to take the pace off the ball and reduces the chances of getting caught near the wicket.
