The back foot defence drill is designed to help players master the defensive technique for balls that are short of a length. Here's a brief overview to help you understand the key elements of the drill:

  • Stance and Balance: Start with a relaxed and balanced stance. The head should remain still and eyes level.
  • Footwork: As the ball approaches, take a deep step back into the crease. The back foot should move back and across first, followed by the front foot which should point towards the point fielder.
  • Body Position: Remain side-on to the ball throughout the shot. The front shoulder should dip slightly with weight staying mostly forward. This creates a solid base for playing the shot.
  • Bat Movement: Use a soft bat grip to decelerate upon impact, ensuring the ball contacts under the eyes with the bat angled slightly away from the body. Soft hands help absorb the ball's impact to prevent it from popping up.
  • Execution: Finish the shot looking through the hands, with a high elbow position to avoid lifting the ball on impact.

This drill is essential for players to develop confidence when facing deliveries that require defensive play on the back foot. It focuses on reinforcing good habits like balance, precise footwork, and controlled bat movement.
