There is no one drill to combat this because it happens to be one of the most difficult, not to mention, dangerous situations in football. You have to combat these things as a team because the breakdown can occur anywhere on the pitch. As I have mentioned in earlier answers, the first step is to identify and cut out the early ball. Breakaway goals don't happen when players start running the length of the pitch (unless you're playing Messi). The early ball, which is played to attackers and frees up space to attack, is the first priority I have attached a simple but effective drill to work on this. If you like, I have some follow-up drills that then lead to a more game-like scenario.
Chippy game
DESCRIPTION
Make three squares right next to each other. Dimensions of the two outside squares could be 12m x 12m. The inside square has to be bigger (12m x 20m). Red player must try and gain possession in the outside square while the blue players in that square pass 5 times to each other. If they succeed in completing 5 passes, they play a chipped pass to the other area. The other red players now defend and so on. As soon as any of the blues lose possession, they become the new red and vice versa.
