The ball starts with one pod. As they are lifted the jumper is held in the air until the next pod is lifted. When the next pod reaches the top of their jump the ball is lobbed to that jumper. Once the ball has been caught they can go back to ground. The drill continues in this way, with players working together in a piston like fashion.

1. Two players stand either side of a tackle tube (tackle tube on the floor 'stood up'). The coach shouts go and the two players turn inwards to face each other and the tube. The players then get set in a low position before lifting the tube into the air. 2. Three players. One in the middle faces forwards. One player either side holds a tackle tube. The coach shouts left or right (or a call to their discretion) for the middle player to turn to. The middle player and the teammate on that side lift the tackle tube into the air the same as the first drill. 3. Three players. Two players set up in the set position either side of one tackle tube, while the other player is set on their own behind a tackle bag facing inwards. The player on the outside of the two runs quickly round their first bag, to join the player on their own. Together the players lift the tube into the air, as per the first two drills.

Lineout Race

This drill is a race across the pitch or whichever distance the coach deems appropriate. Two teams of four: one thrower, three players in the lineout pod. The front lineout player faces towards the pod, with their back to the thrower. The teams are lined up next to each other, about 5-10 metres apart. The coach shouts GO and each team's lineout taker throws the ball as the pod lift the middle player into the air to catch the ball. Once the ball is caught, the middle player is let down to the ground and they leave the ball on the floor. The three pod players then move to the next spot ready for the next lineout throw. The outer pod players then lift the middle player to the air as the ball is thrown in. If the ball is dropped, the throw must be taken again from the same position.

Lineout: lift

Learning to lift and work as a a pod of three is the foundation of an effective line out. Players must also learn to lift whilst moving with the ball player. Once they are in the correct position. Ensure both payers squat down with a flat back before attempting to lift the player. Hand placement is key to the lineout lift. The back player must place his hands high up the back of the legs whilst the front lifter lifts with his hands placed just above the knee. Once this is set in the stop position at the bottom of the lift both players must simultaneously drive up to the extended position. Your lifters will find it useful to also drive their chests forwards moving into the hold. As soon as the player collects the ball, both lifters must simultaneously lower the player and ensure not to release until the player is safely back on the ground.
