Encouraging Positional Awareness

The 'My Stuff' feature is amazing! It's a coach's best friend!

DESCRIPTION

This game is designed to split the pitch into thirds; Attacking, Midfield and Defending. It is designed for younger players and allows them to understand the role and position each position plays in a game of football.

COACHING POINTS

Start by marking out the thirds of the pitch, I'd Advise using flat markers rather than cones so that they do not influence the game.

Split the group into 2 equal teams and then either assign positions or allow them to choose where they want to. If a player is a defender, they must stay in their defensive third and cannot leave.
Allow the game to run without any other rules at first and allow the players to learn and experiment with the game.

Progressions:

  1. Passes cannot skip a third. This means that a defender cannot play a lofted pass over to the strikers. they have to pass to a midfielder who passes to the strikers.
  2. When a team has possession, one other player from an adjacent third is allowed to enter to aid the play and create an overload
  3. Each player on a team has to touch the ball before they can score.
