Passing
Hi, I'm a 16 year old hoping to get into coaching in the future, I currently coach an u8s grassroots team, I'd like to know how I could stop all of them running after the ball and teach them to stay in their positions, while also passing the ball across and making more room and options. Am I asking too much from 8 year olds?
Hi there! It's fantastic to hear that you're interested in coaching at such a young age. Coaching grassroots teams can be both rewarding and challenging. While it's understandable to have high expectations for your players, it's important to remember that they are still very young and at the early stages of their soccer development. That said, it's definitely possible to start introducing concepts like positional play and teamwork to your U8 team.
To encourage positional play and passing among your U8 team:
- Simplify concepts and use age-appropriate language.
- Focus on fundamental skills like passing and receiving.
- Use small-sided games to promote teamwork and spatial awareness.
- Set constraints in drills to encourage passing and staying in position.
- Provide positive reinforcement for good play.
- Be patient and persistent in coaching.
- Lead by example in demonstrating desired behaviors.
Remember to keep it fun and age-appropriate, and adjust expectations accordingly.
