Fun warm-ups for under 12s

I have always coached players between the age of 17-21 , but now I coach a set of U-12s and it hasn't taken much time to realize that it is altogether a different ball game . I have noticed motive related fun activity during warm-up looks good on paper but I don't see my kids having fun , which is most primary part during warm ups for kids . if anyone could suggest me with a few fun related warm ups it would be of great help .

Hi Karan,

It's important to keep your young players developing key skills in football, but you need to also keep them engaged and enjoying themselves!

One fun warm-up could be to include a race - by doing this, you're encouraging some healthy competition but also focusing on a particular skill for your players to improve on. I've included one example below for you, and please do take a look through our other football drills for more ideas.

So in this example, your players will be developing dribbling, as well as their co-ordination and balance. By making it a race, get your players to encourage their team-mates to beat the opposition team!

Hope that helps!

Description:

Set up 3 gates on each side as shown.

The blue team run through the blue gates and the red team run through the red gates.

Players run with the ball through all the gates, round the last cone and then bring the ball back.

The first player to get back wins a point for their team.

Coaching Points:

Look for good close control when near the gates.

Allow players to enter/exit the gates how they like (freedom of expression/creativity).

Look for bigger touches in between the gates.

Are your players getting the ball out of their feet and accelerating away after turning through the gate.

Variations:

Manipulate the distance between cones depending on the type of fitness work you want to achieve from your team.

You might also like to insert a section in the middle where the players have to perform some exercises (Such as press ups, star jumps, sit ups etc) before passing the ball off to the next person (however this may slow the drill if you are doing a race).
