The best advice I can offer is take up Table Tennis. Playing Table Tennis is the best sport for batting and fielding. Not only will your timing improve, you will find that you watch the ball better, your reflexes will improve and so too will your footwork and fitness. You hit a ball hundreds of times over a session, and while it isn`t a cricket ball it lets you practice your timing over and over again. This is then easily transferred to your batting. Learning to react quickly, focusing on a much smaller ball at high speed and learning to read other player`s body movements are all easily transferrable to playing cricket.
My cricket season following taking up Table Tennis tripled my average and quadrupled my aggregate for the season. Whenever, I was unable to play Table Tennis over winter (mostly because of work and new children) my batting suffered the following season.
Most of the players of the great West Indies teams of the 80`s were all regular Table Tennis players.
