how can a batsman can look to pick up line and length as quickly as possible?
You need to pay attention to the ball as it comes out of the bowlers hand. If it is released near the top of the bowling arm`s arc, then it will be pitched up. If it is released well after the top of the arc it will be short, in between a good length. Start looking at where bowlers let go of the ball from behind the nets at the batsman`s end.. It is something you need do on a regular basis, after a while it starts to become easier to do. If you do it long enough you tend to do it without thinking, it just becomes an instinctive thing.
Watching the ball out of the bowlers hand will also help you pick up the line as well. You should be telling yourself as the bowler is about to deliver the ball "watch it out of his hand". You should be doing this every ball. As soon as you realise that you aren`t saying this to yourself every ball, then you should also recognise that you are no longer concentrating, and if you aren`t concentrating to capacity you aren`t going to last very much longer.
