Partner Finisher

Players are in partners with one ball between them. Activities are listed below, you can choose to do these in any order, repeat them or use a coach calls system.  1. Lunge jumps x2 squat and pass. 2. Ab twist and pass. 3. Long overhead pass. 4. Fast feet short passing.  5. Low ball, drive around, long ball.  6. Short high ball, over drive around, receive long pass.

Warm ups

Pass and Run - In front, behind

Players stand in 2 lines, with a feeder in front of each line. Players pass the ball out to their feeder and then swap sides (going in front or behind the other passing player) to receive the return pass from the other feeder. Players receive the pass from the feeder and then pass to the next players for them to go again.

Warm ups

Pass and Switch

Set up : 2 balls a third court space 8+ players 4 lines, 2 facing eachother.   2 players (workers) from front of the lines swith no ball, drive straight to receive a flat pass from the line directly opposite. Ball is passed back and working player changes angle to receive a lob over top. Working player turns and passes ball back to the line they started in then diagonally cuts across to the opposite line Worker drives onto ball and receives a flat pass from the receiver of previous pass. Worker passes to the line diagonally opposite from where they started.

Warm ups

Position Learning

Players jog, hop or skip around the outside of the court. When the coach (player X) calls a position all players have to run to that area of the court.

Warm ups

Quick Decisions - Jump and Land

Split your players into two groups and get them to pair up. The first pair in the line set off and must first choose a hoop to jump and land into - it must not be the same as other player. Both then run to the cone in the middle before then changing direction and choosing the next hoop. Where they jump and land again. They cannot go to the same hoop as the other player, nor can they go back to the same hoop as last time. Repeat this one last time. Coach or feeder can send in ball at final hoop for a one-two pass. Return to the line by jogging around the outside of the court.

Warm ups

Rats & Rabbits

Players get into pairs. 1 of the pair will be a rabbit and the other will be a rat. Rats and rabbits will line up next to each other, facing their partner about 1 meter apart. Coach will either call rats or rabbits. If coach calls rats, they will turn and run to the baseline before the rabbit can touch them. Same for the rabbits if rabbit is called. Progression: If the coach calls rats, the rats try to get around their rabbit partner and to the opposite baseline and vice versa. The defending player is using their body to restrict the attackers movement.

Warm ups

Rats and Rabbits

Blues are the rats. Whites are the rabbits. On the command 'Rats', the rats run to the next 1/3 line with the rabbits chasing them. Return to the centre line and give the next command.

Warm ups

Reactions

4 players, 2 balls. The Player in the middle has to, on reciept of the ball, pass the ball onto a player that does not have a ball. This can not be to the player that just passed them the ball. Progression Players 1 and 3 move wider around the worker.

Warm ups

Rotating and turning Pass

Players line up in 2 lines facing each other. Blue player 1 throws to Blue player 3 who runs forwards to meet the pass. Blue player 3 turns and passes to Blue player 4, and then runs on to join the line behind Blue player 2. Blue player 4 then throws to Blue player 1 who runs forwards to meet pass, Blue player 1 turns and passes to Blue player 2. Blue player 1 then runs behind Blue player 4 etc. Drill continues...

Warm ups

Round High Pass

Split into pairs with 1 ball. White player 1 moves forward to receive either a short pass or a bounce pass from Blue player 1 and returns the ball. White player 1 then runs around Blue player 1 before receiving a high pass and returns the ball to Blue player 1, repeat. NB Encourage White player 1 to lead with one shoulder when moving back in order to signal to the feeder.

Warm ups

Run and follow

Position 4 red players on the first 4 cones of the tree and 4 blue players in a queue at the base of the tree. Like a pendulum, blue players from the queue run to the person in front of them and stop. Like in a relay the person who was standing on the cone runs to the next cone and then stops as the person who was previously on the cone runs the next one. Once the red players reach the top of the tree they then run all the way back to the start, sprinting along the diagonals and side-stepping along the horizontals. Repeat this until the 4 first cones are now occupied by the queuing players and the players who were on the cones are now at the start.

Warm ups

Running Drills - 3 part warm up

Drill 1. Start with a gentle jog around the court, throwing in some sidesteps, high knees and heel flicks. Drill 2. Line up two teams on opposite sides of the court and give each player a number or position. On the coach's call the players who has had their numbers called spint into the center, touch the cone and then run back to their touchline. Drill 3. Finish with some back and forth running. Players complete 10 runs (there and back) as quickly as possible.

Warm ups

Scramble Pass

4 Players, 2 balls. Blue player 1 without a ball receives a ball from White player 3,and passes it on to White player 1 (who did not start with a ball), receives from white 2 and gives to white 3 etc.

Warm ups

Side to Side Pass

Players work in pairs with 1 ball. The worker (white) receives the ball from feeder (blue) at shoulder height while moving left and right alternately (approx. 1 metre either side of central position). Encourage workers to land on their outside foot (ie. on right foot when moving to the right and vice versa) and then step towards feeder with second foot to release the ball.

Warm ups

Small Unit Possession

Cone out a square, 5m x 5m, with 3 attacker's and 2 defenders inside. The attackers are just keeping score of how many passes they can make.

Warm ups

Squad Straight Cross

8+ players, 2 balls, half court space.  1. Balls start in opposite corners. 2. Player at the front pass the ball diagonally across the square and joins the back of that line. 3. The player who receives the diagonal pass now sends a straight pass to the line opposite them and joins that line.  4. Passes are alternated.

Warm ups

Street Tag

Split your players into 2 teams 4v4 with one ball to start and mark out a square grid (20x20) by using cones. The white players (catchers) pass the ball between themselves to try and tag the black player (escaped prisoner) with the ball. The black player has to stay inside the grid, as do the white players. White players can only move when they do not have the ball. Once the black players gets tagged they switch with the white player who tagged them.

Warm ups

Sumo Wrestlers

2 Players facing each other. The idea is that each player has to try and touch the calves of their partners and at the same time ensure that they do not get caught.

Warm ups

Tag Ball

In one third of the court any number of players work with one ball between them. The aim of the game is for players to pass the ball to each other, whilst one player attempts to catch the player in possession of the ball. Once the player in possession has been caught players swap roles, with the player who was caught becoming the next catcher.

Warm ups

Tag Warm Up

Create a box out of cones in the middle of one third. 3 attackers start in this area with the ball. 3 defenders are positioned around the box in the third.  The attackers aim is to reach the outside lines by running with the ball, but they can only do this one at a time. The defenders aim is to tag the attackers to prevent them from reaching the third edges. If an attacker is tagged they then pass back to another attacker in the box, who will attempt to run to the sideline. Attackers need to find and create gaps.
