Stance

  • Make sure that you have a relaxed but firm stance that is comfortable, if the stance is not comfortable then the batter will not be able to get the full potential out of the shot, if you are comfortable then you will be able to be more focused on the shot and the game and fielding position.
  • Drill 1: Set up in the crease, do some shadow batting (batting without hitting a ball) and set you chin down. able to watch the bowlers every move and action, in slightly to your shoulder, keeping your head and body still when watching the bowler.
  • Drill 2: find a straight line on the floor, e.g. tiles, floorboards and play shots along that line change what shat you play but play along that line and make sure you are able to with the stance mentioned above, then play the shot with the face of the bat along the line all the way through, ensure that your weight is forward and you head is over the ball when you hit it, the last bit is a must do.
  • Drill 3: when in your stance make sure you take your mark, fine where the middle stump is, generally, and mark it on the crease line (ask umpire for help) then tap your bat there before each ball ensuring that you are always on your marker.
  • Make sure that when you are playing drives, front and back foot that you can feel your arm brushing your shirt. this will help to play the right shot with a good consistency.

Grip • To make sure you’re getting your hands in the right position for the V-grip, all you have to do is stick to this useful little guide: • Lay your cricket bat on the ground with the face of the bat pointing downwards, and the handle pointing directly towards you. • Hold your hands out in front of you and create the V shapes by positioning your thumbs in the way I’ve shown in picture 2 below. Right handed batsmen should have their right hand on top, whereas left handers should have their left hand on top. The V’s on each hand should line up with each other. Imagine there is a line connecting them! • Bend down whilst keeping your hands in this position and place them on the back of the bat handle like I’m demonstrating in picture 3 below. Make sure there is a small gap between them! The V shapes created by the position of your hands should now line up with the middle of the back of the bat. • Once your hands are in position on the back of the handle, wrap your fingers around it and pick up the bat.
