First Steps With Forehand Return

Player keeps cone in both hands. Coach serves to deuce side. Player catches the ball into the cone after the first bounce. Player takes the ball out of the cone and throws back to coach using dominant hand.

Player 1 - is working on change of direction on forehand. 2 forehands cross court, 1 forehand down the line Player 2 - feeding - can work on lateral movement and consistency, 2 cross court forehands and 1 back hand line.

Forehand to forehand team tram line drill

Players get into pairs. Each pair plays against another pair rallying inside the tram line. The two players rotate in each team, taking it in turns to hit the ball using only their forehand. Every time the ball stays inside the tram lines they score a point The first pair to score 10 is the winner.

Forehand x 2/Volley x 2 Rally

Coach, 4 players, basket of tennis balls. Working in half the court player 1 starts on the baseline. Coach feeds the ball for player 1 to play a deep forehand. A rally starts, and player 1 advances to play a mid court forehand, then moves forward to the net to play 2 backhand volleys. Player 1 joins the queue. Repeat the drill for players 2,3, and 4. The drill is continuous.

Forehand/Backhand Rally

4 players. 2 on each side of the net. Player 1 hits a deep forehand,and a rally starts with each player hitting a deep forehand shot. When it is player 1's turn again they hit a deep backhand shot, and the rally continues. Rally alternates between forehand and backhand shots. Repeat the drill. The drill is continuous.

From Rally To Winner

Player stands on the baseline. Coach stands at the net on the ad side. Player and coach rally together.  Player uses only forehand stroke and hits all the balls down the line. After receiving short ball player runs to the ball and hits forehand cross-court winner.

Players stand on the service line. Both players are only allowed to play their designated shot. Player 1 hits a topspin shots; Player 2 returns the ball by hitting half-volleys.

Good court positioning

-Learning correct positions enhances court coverage and enables the player to respond to the most likely shot placements by the opponent. -Place 4 markers in a diamond shape around the centre of the baseline. Start by the coach telling the player to move to a correct marker after each shot.(Using forward, back, left, right commands.

Ground stroke consistency

-Players hit ground strokes in pairs until one of them makes a mistake. The waiting player(s) come in if mistake is made. -After 5 minutes the winners are the players with the longest rally. -More advanced players can be given target areas to hit to.

Groundstrokes, Inside-out forehands

-Players work on ground strokes and depth, aiming to hit beyond the service line.Possibly put targets down. -After rotations, swap to backhand. - Players no.1 and no.6 can hit inside-out forehands depending on ability.

Player starts on the baseline. Coach feeds a short ball to the deuce side. Player moves inside the court and hits a forehand drop shot down the line.

Height for Depth

Players rally up and down the middle of the court, attempting to get the longest rally they can hitting beyond the service box. Racquets are placed in the net to force the players to hit with height, which will help them to get the depth they are looking for. Pairs of players can compete against each other's courts to see which pair gets the longest rally within a certain amount of time.

Purpose: To learn that shots go higher over the net than imagined   Variation "A" Cover the net with towels and ask 2 singles players to play up to 11 points. Feed underhand for 2 points alternately   Variation "B" Erect badminton nets to create higher target over net Compete as in "A".

Hit and move: Running drives

Players are working in threes with player 1 in a full-court and players 2 and 3 in the forehand and backhand corners respectively. Player 1 is hitting running drives, 1 forehand cross followed by 1 backhand cross. Player 2 is hitting a forehand line, and player 3 a backhand line. The pattern is played in this way for up to 3 minutes depending on the level of fitness of player 1.

Player rallies with partner. Player alternates hitting forehand topspin cross-court and backhand slice down the line.

Inside out fh: Threes

  Player 1 is working in the whole court but primarily in the red target zone, hitting ONLY fhs: 1 fh cross, and 1 fh inside out.   Player 2 is working in the fh corner and is hitting a forehand back to the centre of the court, middle of the red target zone.   Player 3 is working in the bh corner and is hitting a backhand down the line to the outer edge of the red target zone.    Player 3 feeds the ball in down the line, player 1 hits a fh cross, player 2 hits a fh down the middle, player 1 runs around the ball and hits an inside out fh back to player 3, and the pattern repeats.

Jump & Catch

Hula-hoops are set on the left and right side in front of the player. Coach stands in front of the player Player jumps into the left hoop, catches the ball in left hand and lands only on one leg Player throws the ball back to coach and performs the same activity to the right side

Can use this rally as a progression of "Height" drill Purpose: Understanding the importance of length Start with a coach feeding the balls from the other side of the net. Only shots landing deep of service line count as "in".    Progress to a rally with 2 Players full court Play up to 11 points. Feed underhand for 2 points alternately.
