Dictating the Attacker Away from the Circle

Have 2 feeders positioned on the third line about 5m apart. An attacker starts just off the semicircle, with a defender behind them. Feeders pass side to side and the defender repositions to the ball side but still behind the attacker. Within 3 passes from the feeders to each other the attacker moves around the circle edge to become a forward option. Defender keeps repositioning behind to stop the attacker getting deep or on circle edge. Points: If Attacker receives the ball off the circle edge = Defender gets a point If Attacker receives the ball on the circle edge = Attacker gets a point Keep score out of 5.

Defence

Engaging the Front Defender

Get into 4s with one ball Mark out a coned square, approximately 3x3m One player will be the feeder and stand at the top of the square - this player will have a 3ft marker over them (D1) The other two players will be an attacker and a defender (D2)  inside the square D2 will use their body (without contacting) to force the attacker high into the back of D1, whilst doing this they will call left or right to D1 so D1 can drop back the correct side Restart the drill in the square and repeat

Defence

Figure of 8 defence

Players work in pairs with one ball and three cones, placed in a triangle. The feeder stands above the top of the triangle. Using quick, small steps the worker has to rotate around the cones in a figure of 8 before then receiving the ball and returning it to the feeder at the top of the triangle.

Defence

Follow the ball

Players stand in pairs, with the worker standing behind the ball holding player. Depending on where the ball holding player holds the ball the worker should respond to the position of the ball using fast feet. If the ball is held high above the player's head, the worker needs to come in front of the other player. If the ball is held low the worker needs to rotates to the back of the other player, ball held to left/right worker responds to position of ball and snakebites to the left/right.

Defence

Follow your player

Players work in pairs (one defender, one attacker). The court is divided into 3 channels along the length of the court. The ball is placed in the center court channel. Players must jog, sprint and dodge their way through each outside channel - with the defender trying to stay between the attacker and the static ball in the center of the court.

Defence

Front Marking with Ball Transfer

3 Feeders attempt to pass the ball to a static player A (varying the type of passes). The defender adjusts positiong to intercept the feed

Defence

Full Team Finisher

Full team cross drill Set up: 8+ players, one court space, 2 balls. Players set up in four corners in equal numbers, opposite lines facing each other. Both balls start on the same side with the person and the front of the line. Opposing front 2 players drive out on a diagonally and receive a pass from the opposite line. They turn pass back to the side they came from (but the opposite line). Then immediately become a defender for the person who now has the ball.  The person now at the front of the line, with the ball now delivers a pass to players who have driven out on a diagonal and the drill begins again.

Defence

GK dancing

3 Blue players pass ball to each other and attempt to pass the ball to a static player White 4 (varying types of passes). Defender Green 1 adjusts positioning according to the position of the ball and she attempts to intercept feed. Progression :- Attacker becomes a little more active. Blue players make a smaller area so ball movement is quicker

Defence

GK Interceptions

Inside the shooting circle set up a smaller semicircle with cones, dividing the the semicircle into an inner and outer section of roughly the same width. Feeder starts play in the goal third, to one side. The GS runs out of the circle to receive the pass. They then have the option to pass to an attacker (who is on the edge of the circle opposite to the side feeder) or to pass back to the unmarked feeder who has run in. Whichever of these receives the ball will pass it back to the attacker once the attacker has run into the circle.   Points: If the attacker receives the ball inside the inner circle then they get 1pt. If the defender makes a successful intercept or forces the attacker to receive the ball in the area of the circle outside of the cones then they get 1pt.  The first to 5 points wins. If the attacker receives the ball you can get them to take a shot, and have the defender recover quickly to mark.

Defence

Gladiators

This drill works best with the full squad (10+ players). One feeder stands at the side of each third of the court (white in the diagram). These players are on the same side as the attacker (red 1 in the diagram). There are 2 defenders in each third (blue in the diagram). Using just half the width of the court, Red 1 has to work their way down the court receiving three passes from the player at the side of the court, in each third.

Defence

Intercept- Hunting the Ball

*AUDIO DESCRIPTION ON* Set up: Goal 6+ players (at least 2 players at each corner) 2 lines 1 ball   A player (player 1) starts out of the lines facing back at the line (line A).  1st player (player 2) in the other line (line B) drives directly out to the same distance as player 1.  Player at the front of line A starts with the ball and passes the ball diagonally to the player 2 who has driven out from line B.  Player 1 is to drive across to intercept the pass to player 2.  If successful player 1 passes to line B and joins the line, if not, player 2 will have received the ball and passes to line B (player 1 still joins the line). Player 2 then becomes the person intercepting as another palyer drives out from line A.  The process is the same but opposite lines.

Defence

Intercepting from behind

Groups of three or fours one ball. 2 feeders and 2 defenders. feeders stand 4 to 6 metres apart defenders position themselves beside the feeders. Player 1 and 2 pass the ball back and forth. White 1 must move to intercept the pass. Progression :- Defence must move round feeders so eventually she is starting from behind her.

Defence

Keeping the Attacker off the Circle Edge

Have 2 feeders positioned on the third line about 5m apart. An attacker starts just off the semicircle, with a defender behind them. Feeders pass side to side and the defender repositions to the ball side but still behind the attacker. The feeders can pass in to the attacker and when this happens the defender cuts in front for the intercept The defender works for 4 intercepts and then players rotate roles.

Defence

Large Group Defence Circle

*AUDIO DESCRIPTION ON* 6+ players set up in a circle with 1 ball and 2 defenders in the middle.  Players in the circle pass amongst themselves but cannot pass to the player next to them.  Defenders are to work together to intercept the ball. If successful, defenders join the circle and new defenders are in the middle.

Defence

LJLL- Lean, Jump, Ladder, Late Hand.

*AUDIO DESCRIPTION ON* Set up in pairs 1 partner (A) has the ball. Partner A faces away from partner B. A Passes the ball in the air to themself and turns. Partner B jumps back to 3 feet distance and needs to defend in one of 4 ways.  Lean Jump Ladder Late hand Switch over players.

Defence

Marking player and intercepting

Blue 1 and 2 passing to each other. No. 3 is dodging from side to side. White 1 defends. Feed can come in at any time to no. 3 and defence attempts intercept.

Defence

Moving round attacker

White 1 is the defence. Blues 1 and 2 have a ball. Slowly, they pass the ball back and forth and defence moves to the ball side of the player. Progression - add the ball in to Blue 3 allowing White 1 to intercept the pass

Defence

Piece of Cake

Every player is involved in this defensive exercise. The first player in the center passes to an outside player. After passing the ball the passing player drives forward and defends the player who has just received the pass. Once the defender is in place the player to the right of the player who has received the ball should sprint into the center and look to receive a pass (bounce, chest or high) from the outside player. Once the player in the center has the ball the drill can begin again.

Defence

Pocket drop defence

Set up: 1 ball, half court space, 4 players. Players set up as if hte ball is to be taken from the midcourt into the shooting circle.  Aim is for GK/GD to time an intercept that will be delivered into the pocket.

Defence

Prevent the middle Pass

Players work in groups of 5 - 3 passing players on the outside of the triangle, one attacking player in the middle and one defender who is marking the central player. The defender has to prevent the attacker from getting free to receive a pass from the outside players.
