What is the playmaker's role in handball?

Depends on what you mean by playmaker?
Every player can be a playmaker. In some teams the pivot is the playmaker.
Playmaker can be:

• an initiator, starting point of concept play
• the best player of the team by means of scoring most goals
• playmaker, the center backcourt player

Then he is the initiator, starting point of concept play.
Together with the coach he decides what is best for the team: what defending system will be played and what concepts/tricks will be played.

He decides when and how the different tricks will be played. Depending on what tricks/concepts are played he will be able to shoot.

Most of the time a trick/concept is played and the attack goes on further when no real shooting chances are obtained.

I think he is just one of the players of the team and modern handball requires all kinds of techniques and shots of all the players.

Backcourt players change positions many times during an attack so he needs to master the normal shots like : center shot, center shot when running, feinting and break through, jumpshots etc.
Passing to other backcourt players and the pivot should not be forgotten.

In my opinion there are no special shots for a playmaker.
