In handball, set play and open play also refer to different types of play during a match.

Set play in handball is a specific situation in which play is restarted from a static position, such as a free throw, a 7-meter throw, or a throw-in. In set play, the attacking team has a planned strategy or play that they have worked on in training, and they try to execute it to score a goal. Defending teams also have a strategy to defend against set plays, which can include specific formations, man-marking, or zonal marking.

Open play in handball refers to the rest of the game that is not a set play. During open play, players move the ball around the court using a combination of passes, dribbling, and shooting to try to score a goal. Open play requires players to be more improvisational and creative, as the defense is constantly moving and trying to prevent the attacking team from scoring.

I think you might mean: static set play and transition play.

In static set play, every player keeps his own position and does not leave it during static set play. The ways players can get to chances to score a goal are: individual 1:1 actions, trying to bind two defenders to create a chance for other players, contra passes, express passes and blocking defenders` movements by the pivot.

In transition play one or more players change positions to create shot chances by crossing, wing players going to pivot positions, backcourt players going to pivot positions. Which transition move to play is mostly decided in the third phase of the attacking moments of the play.
