Goalkeeping Basic Handling

Goalkeeping is a technical position. Having the correct technique will help with the simple saves as well as the trickier ones - work on their basic from hand positioning and leg movements to create a foundation for a top keeper to grow on.

Preview Plan

  • Two gates at either side of the goal.
  • Two goalkeepers working.
  • Servers play ball into hands of the goalkeepers at the same time.
  • Goalkeeper makes the catch and returns to the server, then receives serve into hands from opposite side.
  • The goalkeepers get a final shot from original server getting the goalkeeper into a diving catch.

Coaching points

  • Short sharp movements to get into line and get set in time for the shot.
  • Check weight is forward and the goalkeeper can dive if needed.
  • Goalkeeper should try and catch and if they need to parry, do they push the ball into safe zones?

  • Can introduce more service points or increase the amount of repetitions
  • Goalkeepers can do a full set from one side and then finish with a shot from distance from the opposite side.
