Show the children how to carry a mat. Get the children to assist in getting the mats out. Ask the children to walk and run in and out of the mats making sure that they do not step on them. On the teachers command stop and ensure that one foot is on a mat.

Layout the mats. Ask the children to run in and out of the mats with no bumping into each other. Then ask the children to move around using tiny steps then making as bigger steps as possible. Get the children to stop on a mat and make as smaller shape as possible before moving off again. Then encourage the children to make as bigger shape as possible on the mat.

Layout the mats. Get the children to start by running in and out of the mats then ask them to do the same with tiny steps. Ask the children to take it in turns to do big bounces over and across the mats. How big can they make their bounces ?.

Take out mats. Run in and out of the mats changing from heavy to light running. The next stage is to ask the children to bounce over the mats and ask the question how many bounces in a minute. The final progression is to do a bug jump on to the mat.

Take out the benches one at a time. Run in and out of the benches before stopping with one hand touching a bench and waving with the other. Repeat a number of different body parts touching the bench e.g. hands / feet. The next stage is to get the children to step over a bench and then slide back through it on their tummies.

Take out the benches. The practice starts with the children hoping / jumping around the benches. The next stage is for the children to walk around the benches and when the reach a bench to step over it. Ask the children to hop around, when they reach a clear bench then they must try and jump onto it, turn around and then jump back off it. Ask the children to run, hop or jump in different directions between the benches.

Take the benches out. Ask the children to travel in and out of the benches. The next stage is to ask the children to move over / under the benches in any way that they want. Use some children to demonstrate the different movements. Ask the children to move on the floor with their feet only. The children may use their hands and feet to move over or under the benches.

The next stage is to ask the children to move under / over the benches using only their feet. Ask the children to travel in different ways around the hall, focusing on curled and stretched shapes. Ask the children to curl up on a pice of apparatus and grow into a stretched shape. Hold the stretched shape and count to 5 and then ask the children to stand.

Set out apparatus. Ask the children to travel in/out, under/over the apparatus. Ask the children to bounce around the apparatus and to stretch out on it when space can be found. Ask the children to travel around the hall in a low curled position.

Discuss forwards, backwards and sideways movements. Demo the different movements. Walk backwards slowly, making sure that the children look their shoulders as they do it. The next stage is for the children to walk sideways. Ask the children for other ways to move around the floor on their feet.

Benches Game

Take out the apparatus. Travel in and out of the apparatus in different ways e.g in any way the children choose feet, hands, crawl etc. Its is important to keep the children moving all the time. When the apparatus is clear get the children to slide underneath it and step over the top.
