Soccer: 1v1 Protect the Space Behind the Defenders

DESCRIPTION

  • Attackers serving lines 30yds out. 2 static defenders centrally positioned 20yds out. First two attackers in front of the defenders
  • Server 1 from the attacking line plays  a through ball behind the opposite defender to server 2 beyond the defence line. 
  • Server 2 attempts to score whilst Goalkeeper comes out to defend the space.

COACHING POINTS

  • Decision to dive at feet or smother a loose touch.
  • Same technique as low dive if ball is outside of the attacker
  • Delay and have bodyweight forward
  • As attacker approaches get hands down low but hands should be forward of the knees.
  • Teach goalkeeper to protect themselves with the ball and forearm high also bend top knee up to protect the body whilst in dive. This is called the finishing position.
  • Defensive recovery runs and can they provide cover for the goalkeeper
  • Introduce concept of recovery lines for the goalkeeper fastest point from A to B to get as much of the body into line with the player with the ball
  • Goalkeeper communication

PROGRESSION

  • One of the attackers can play a wall pass for the through ball or ball over the top 
  • Attacking server who played the initial ball can join in the attack. 
  • 1 Static defender can become active always have an overload
