The position of the back stop can be close or far behind the batter. The positioning helps the batter decide where to bowl.

Barrier Catch (side view)

Approach the ball at speed and as you get into line with the ball, twist your upper body, leading with the shoulder furthest from the ball. Bend both knees, so that the knee of the leg nearest to the ball touches the ground, but it is also next to the back of the heel of the other leg. With fingers down and head forward, pick up the ball and then stand back up ready to deliver an overarm throw.

Collect, Turn and Throw

Players take it in turns to run out to the rolling ball, bend down, pick it up and then turn and throw it back to their partner. When picking up the ball players should aim to put their non-throwing side foot on the outside of the ball. A right-hander would place their left foot to the outside of the ball. They would then bend down, twist as they stand up and then throw back.
