Handball: defence of dribbling

Get your players working together to defend and block - keeping the opposition at bay in this physical defending session

Players line up in pairs facing each other with about 5 metres between them.

The attacking player dribbles towards the defending player. As they approach the defender they should make the move to throw the ball.

It is the defender's job to push the ball away as the attacker goes to throw, using the hand that is closest to the ball.

As players run forward to defend they should think about their stance and approach:

They should take small, fast steps (never jump) to avoid over-committing. Approach diagonally, facing towards the ball, and angling their body to direct their opponent away from the goal area.

Keep their arms open, wide and high. Stand on the balls of their feet with knees slightly bent.

defending pivot :
- pivot is left hander : hold your right hand between hand of pivot at eye height
- pivot is righthander : hold your left hand between hand of pivot at eye height
- one hand in the back of pivot, put pressure on him
- always go for the ball
- static pivot : stand in front
- agile pivot : try to defend when standing, moving behind him

- fore-arms nearly next to eachother
- elbows bent towards eachother
- look in betweem you almost closed fore-arms, in this way the ball can never hit your face
- keep enough muscle tension on the arms and fingers
- move forward into the direction the ball comes from
