The Matthew, Will & Gavin Drill

Controlled Pass and Follow Creating Scoring Opportunity

COACHING POINTS

The game we are teaching this season is one we hope will benefit you for the rest of your hockey career. We can teach you assigned plays, but there is no benefit in becoming robots on the ice.

You want to put yourselves in a situation where you can control the outcome and create "a scoring opportunity". Win the puck, control it and determine using your own hockey sense how to create shots on goal using all the players on the ice.

Important Notes:

  1. Matthew (D) had the puck as the defensman in the drawing.  He passed to Will the left forward (F) who had his back to the center of the ice giving Matthew a passing target away from the center of the ice.
  2. Will caught the pass and began skating or cycling the pack back toward the position where Matthew started.  Matthew followed his pass toward the position Will just left.
  3. When Will reached the point where Matthew started the play he looked up and saw Gavin wide open in the center of the ice at right forward (F).  Gavin's back was to the opponents goal.
  4. Gavin saw that Matthew had replaced Will and was now wide open circling from the outside of the boards to the middle of the oppenents zone.  Gavin made a nice pass to Matthew that resulted in a shot on goal.
