This session's designed to help your look at your players' ability to pass the ball off both hands over an ever increasing distance. During the session players are put under ever increasing pressure to see how far their passing skills have developed in order to give you an idea of their ability to play at a certain level and also to note what they may need to work on during the weeks to come.

I'd suggest that you come into this session with some plan for noting you assessment of your players. Remember to keep your players under evaluation and to build a profile of each player. This will give you as a coach a clear view of what you need to help players to improve and will also allow your players to honestly think about what they need to improve.

Also - if you are selecting players for a team - they will often ask when they were not picked. By assessing and providing feedback, you can say why!

I'm always keen to allow players sometime to take responsibility for their own warm-up. So lets give them 5 minutes. During this time - it's always interesting to see which players emerge as team leaders - which players are listened to etc.

You might consider telling the players that the have 5 minutes to warm up as a group, tell them where they should do it, and let them get on with it (jogging up and down the pitch, stretching, dynamic stretches etc). There should be no contact in this session - so you have the freedom to give your players some space to shape at least this part of training.

1. You might wish to get players coming off the ground and running onto the ball e.g. get the first, second, third etc. reciever to lay flat on the group - telling them that they can only get up and run onto the ball when the ball carrier next to them has the ball and is moving.

  1. Remind players to get their hands out to catch the ball.
  2. Think about the weighting of the pass - is the reciever close or far away?
  3. Do players need to use a spin pass all the time.
  4. Encourage players to provide a pass that the reciever can run onto.
  5. Is the form of the pass good - remind players about the key factors regarding the pass without stopping them e.g. ask players that are waiting to go.
  6. Speed ontp the ball.
  7. Good communication e.g. the use of names, location, distance etc.

Remember - this is the warm-up. It might be wise to pick maybe one or two coaching points rather than trying to do everything at once. Your objective here is to get the players warm - bit I'm never keen to scarfice good form at any time - getting the players to do it right over and over will form good habits - accepting poor passing etc. at any time risks players forming or re-enforcing bad habbits.

Notes:

Players are passing the ball over short distances - is the pass weighted correctly, are players spinning the ball when there is no need?

Work like this for about one minute before changing the runners. I'd suggest that you have 10 players at each box. This allows for six to be involved at any one time, and two to be recovering if needed.

Progression:

Get some competition going. Each group of runners have one minute to complete as many ups and down runs as they can without dropping the ball or making a bad pass.

We will be doing the same as above, but this time I want you to ask the guys on the cones to take an extra step out after they make each pass. In doing so I want you to get the guys to take the cones with them. If you feel that a step out is too much you might as them to take a half step.

You will find that many of the coaching points that are noted above can be applied to this part of the session.

For me this is about testing players, and pushing them a little further each time. Looking at the noted progressions will allow you to have a look at your players ability to execute a task while under pressure, e.g. does their fitness allow them to perform the same task again and again - will silmilar outcomes.

Discussion:

If you decide to stop the exercise to chat to players - do your best to make it quick and to get the players back into action as soon as you can. Ask, don't tell - and get the players thinking about one or two targets that you're keen to develop.

Progression:

You might decide to test fintess even more by having the non ball carrying player at each end go down flat onto his front before getting to his feet again and running onto the ball. This will increase depth, should encourage speed onto the ball, and will push players workrate to a new level.

You may also decide that you would like the players on the cones to do more. There they could complete one press-up after each pass out - increasing this as the session builds.

The distance between the runners can also increase as the activity progresses.

Keep going until the players reach the point of failure in terms of their ability to pass the ball again and again over distance. This is a positive and involved test for all players involved.

If you decide to stop the exercise to chat to players - do your best to make it quick and to get the players back into action as soon as you can. Ask, don't tell - and get the players thinking about one or two targets that you're keen to develop.

OK, your team is not made up of scrum halfs, and you might argue that have four at each grid is not possible. But that is not really what this is about. I feel that in the modern game you need players that can excute a great many of what would have traditionally been described as their team-mates skills. Therefore why not get as many players working on their ability to pass from the ground as you can, and take this opportunity to evaluate their ability to excute the task.

    Here are the reasons why:

    1. I think your players will think a little more about what the 9 has to do time and time again and possibly listen a little more.
    2. How many times has your 9 got himself involved in a ruck and another player has had to step in, don't you want that all import feed to be solid?
    3. You might find that you have players that operate very well in different positions.

You might think of putting the players passing off the ground under more pressure at the exercise progresses. The following are some suggestions:

    1. A press-up or two, or three, or four between passes.
    2. Having to sprint to a definded area and back before getting back to recieve and make the pass.
    3. A player in front of them on the ground, but with the ability to get up and pressure the passer as soon as he puts his hands onto the ball.

The difference here is that we are going to place a defender with a ruck/tackle shield into the grid - it will be their job to place the attackers under a new type of pressure. The defender should track attackers, making life hard for them.

Remember: the runner are the target - the defender should not interfer with the pass from the cones. It will be up to you to decide if the pass from the cones should be off the ground or out of the hand.

    Encourage players to move defenders.

Are they running lines that support the ball carrier, can they move defenders away from the space that they are looking to attack and can they attack the space before it is gone?

    Notes:

It's not just about drawing the ball carrier. You should think about moving the ball carrier to create space, and the supporting player should also think about moving his defender to create space. Therefore, when the pass is made, it is made into space for a supporting player to come onto. In the exercise we hope to attack space, and to create space where it is not yet there.

    Progression:

You might consider the following, but there won't be time for all of them:

    1. Increase the number of defenders, their role is not to tackle but to put pressure on the attackers. I would stay that you should go to no more than three defenders - and only if you wish to see lines of runners, leg drives through contact, examples of support and communication etc. But don't be afriad to take a risk if you have the time - and to see what happens!
    2. Have only one player for every two cones, this will mean that the passer will have to be in place to recieve the ball off the second receiver. It also means that the players carrying the ball forward will have to think about holding the ball up a little longer to give the last receiver time to get to position.
