Beginners Lesson 4: The Pick Up

The pick-up is the fourth skill that a player should learn.

Inevitably, not every ball will be able to be caught and there will be a lot of balls on the floor. If a player is able to beat their defender and pick up the ball first, they will gain possession of the ball and are more likely to score a goal.

Attack and defence should improve after this session, which will mean your team have a lot more possession if they can successfully pick up.

The ball should be picked up from the ground quicker. There should be less 'scrapping' and there should be no 'covering'. Ensure no one 'covers' the ball.

Reinforce teaching points in the game. Make sure that when pupils pick up the ball for any practice they use the correct technique. Punish 'covering' with press ups or burpies!
