Shot Stopping 4: Quick Draw

DESCRIPTION

Setup: Place two cones 30 yard from the goal, spaced evenly with the goalposts. One player at each cone and one in the goal. Drill: The player acting as the goalkeeper faces into the net, feet on the goal line. The two striking players have determined which will strike while the goalkeeper’s back is turned. On the whistle, the goalkeeper turns about and prepares to stop a shot sent immediately by the pre-determined striker. The goalkeeper then faces the net again and repeats the previous steps.

COACHING POINTS

Focus: The initial focus should be on reacting to the incoming ball. The strikers are not attempting true shots at this stage. Duration: 10 balls total. Modification: Depending upon the goalkeeper’s skill, the shots themselves can be made more difficult, starting with shots to the feet.
