Footwork 5: Side-Step Turn and Catch

DESCRIPTION

Setup: Place 5 cones in a line, 1-1.5 yards between each. One player each side, perpendicular to the line of cones and 25-20 yards away. Last player at one end of the 5 cones to start the drill. Drill: The player in the middle begins the drill by entering the space between 2 cones, facing out, and assuming the ‘Ready’ position. An overhead toss is sent in, the player ‘attacks’ the space and leaps for the ball and returns the ball with a hand-pass. The middle player then performs an about-face, advances to the next opening and repeats on the other side. Continue to the end of the cones and return then rotate out.

COACHING POINTS

The middle player should completely leave the ground to catch the ball and protect the catch with the hurl.
