Judes 2011 Girls Coach, Ireland

DESCRIPTION

Objective: Protect your battleships (cones), destroy the oppositions by knocking them over. Preparation: Mark out two sections separated by no mans land. Red section for the red team, blue section for the blue team. Put traffic cones at the front of each section. At the back of each section balance a football on top of 4 poles in close proximity to each other. Every player starts with a ball. They must try to destroy the oppositions battleships by kicking balls at their cones to try to knock them over. At the same time they must try to protect their own cones from incoming missiles (footballs). They cannot stand in front of their cones but can reach from the side to protect the cones. If the ball is knocked/falls off the poles at the back that battleship is destroyed. Whoever destroys the oppositions battleships first are the Queens of the Sea. Repeat the game but get them to kick with the other foot.

COACHING POINTS

Keep an eye out for them throwing up the ball before trying to kick it. Get them to drop the ball (roll off the shelf) from the hand above their kicking foot (right foot, right hand). For body catches make sure they are keeping their elbows in tight to the body. When they are reaching for the ball make sure their arms are extended with fingers spread out. Again ask them where elbows/fingers should be if they are having difficulty.
