I'm a 17 year old centre and i have trouble defending as i am short any tricks to help me?
Hi Rukhya,
Being shorter in netball can indeed pose some challenges in defending against taller opponents, but there are several strategies and tricks you can use to overcome this disadvantage. Here are some tips to help you improve your defence:
Quick Footwork: Work on your footwork to be agile and quick. Use short, sharp steps to maintain your position and make it difficult for your opponent to predict your movements.
Anticipation: Try to read your opponent's movements and anticipate where they are likely to go. This can help you position yourself more effectively and intercept passes or shots.
Low Stance: Stay low and adopt a defensive stance with your knees slightly bent. This lowers your center of gravity, making it more challenging for your opponent to push past you.
Body Positioning: Use your body to block your opponent's path to the goal. Stand slightly to the side of your opponent, making it harder for them to shoot or pass.
Timing: Focus on the timing of your defensive moves. Wait for the right moment to challenge for the ball, either when your opponent is about to pass or shoot.
Active Hands: Keep your hands up and active to disrupt passes and shots. Even if you can't reach the ball directly, having your hands in the passing lane can force your opponent to alter their throw.=
Remember, defence is not just about height; it's about positioning, timing, and strategy. Practice these tips consistently, and you'll likely find yourself becoming a more effective defender on the netball court.
Hope this helps.

Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
