I'm training for the State League/U17 tryouts next year and I want to know what abilities the really good GSs have, like clean breaking within the circle, high shooting goal percentage etc.
Does anyone have any exercises/drills that I would be able to do by myself or with one or two people to build up skills like breaking? (Sportplan's drills are mainly based on coaching an entire team, and I can't supply that many people to train with me %3A( )
Thankyou in advance,
Belladonna
And nice to meet the netball lovers on this site %3A) I don't have any friends who love netball as much as me...
I would suggest the following qualities%3A - Timing%3A the ability to time your breaks, drives and passes accurately - Aerial ability - Shooting accuracy- DUH! - Body strength andpositioning- the ability to hold your own against aggresive defence, ability to hold for your feeders and body placement to indicate where you want the ball placed. Constant communication is also important, not only in the defence end, but also in attack. Your feeders need to know where you want the ball, your shooting partners needs to know when to drop, screen, clear or drive when you see an opportunity. In regards to training, I would suggest finding 2 or 3 people that are willing to help, and go with basic lobs into the circle, with a defence that is taller than you. SHooting practice can be done on your own, and timing is all about court play unfortunately. Good luck!

Split circle defence is the system the top three NSL teams have built their identity around in 2026. The Goal Keeper and Goal Defence divide the circle into zones, switch in synchrony, and make every passing option look risky. Here is how to coach it.
Most netball shooters know how to shoot. The difference at the top is who can shoot when it counts. A structured 10-minute pre-game mental routine is the most under-used performance tool in club netball - and it is the simplest to teach.
The best Goal Defences in the 2026 NSL season are intercepting more than ever. The reason is not raw athleticism. It is a deliberate shift from chasing the attacker to driving into the flight path of the ball. Here is how to coach it.
