I have 9 players majority with quite a good skill level and a few need of a bit more training. In terms of time on the court how would I rotate them? I usually leave the strongest side on and all players get 3 quarters and a few get the whole game. Is this fair or does anyone have any suggestions? I have always taken the best on approach - particularly when they are so driven on winning!
Clubs usually have policies regarding player rotation so maybe check with your head coach. I prefer to rotate players fairly during the season and play the best combinations in finals but it does depend on what grade the team is in. Low grade = not so much focus on the best team and more about fairness, enjoyment and achieving training goals. High grade = rotate with aim to keep strong combinations on court with incentive for improvement of less skilled players to achieve more time on court.
I have mostly found that with 9 players rotating with 1/2 game rather than 3 quarters is less disruptive to game flow. I have had one team where 3 quarter rotations worked well but they were a very versatile team and had no trouble adapting to frequent player changeovers. So what I am saying is that it depends on strength and versatility of your players and trial & error as to what works best.
it really does depend on how versitile the team is, and how well the combinations play together, and as Janet pointed out, what division you are in. I prefer to play fair during the season and best team for the finals (which could mean some may not play at all during the finals). up to you as the coach really.
