Soccer: Footwork Movement Drill

DESCRIPTION

Set up a square of cones in front of the goal.
Goalkeeper makes distinctive movements around the square towards any of the four cones with changes of direction.
Server then plays a shot at random intervals.

COACHING POINTS

Goalkeeper should always try and get back to a position in the square- depending on the server's position.
Short, sharp movements of the feet, not big steps so GK is balanced and has a platform to push off if the shot comes in early.
GK always has head up.

PROGRESSION

Progress into making the Goalkeeper dive.
Server can play the ball at any time during the movement of the Goalkeeper.

Footwork Step and Dive

*AUDIO DESCRIPTION ON*

Set up 1 hurdle with 2 cones either side to indicate where the step is to be taken, then a wider cone to indicate the goal
Goalkeeper jumps over the hurdle and into set position
Takes one small step with nearest foot then goes into dive

Footwork Square Warm up

Set up a square with cones on the outside of the square.
Should be about 20yds by 20yds.
Goalkeeper passes the ball to another goalkepeer and then performs the footwork on the outside between the cones

Footwork Through the Hoops

*AUDIO DESCRIPTION ON*

Mark out a square with 4 cones 8yds by 8yds.
Goalkeeper starts in the hoop. Then works round cones on the outside.
Each time recieves a shot after they have stepped in the hoop with the nearest foot.

NOTE:

Use cones to make a smaller square if you do not have a hoop

Goalkeeping

In and Out Catch Slalom

Set up a line of equally spaced poles. Keeper starts at the far end and moves quickly in and out between each of the poles in sequence - moving left and then right.

Once they move out (to the right) the feeder plays a mid-pace volley into their body.

The keeper catches this ball and throws it back out before continuing to move between the poles and catching the next ball.
