Football: Step into Top Hand Save

DESCRIPTION

*AUDIO DESCRIPTION ON*

  • Cones are placed on angle opposite server 1
  • Goalkeeper performs footwork and receives a volley or throw into hands.
  • Then travels over the hurdle and steps into tophand save from server 2

COACHING POINTS

  • Is it appropriate to use top hand? Is the amount of steps correct to allow full coverage?
  • Coach must show the goalkeeper the correct way to land the dive safely
  • Younger players may have difficulty hitting the top corner, therefore the coach could do the service or the ball can be thrown. Alternatively, have a server holding a stationary ball for the goalkeeper to get used to the technique

PROGRESSION

  • Server 2 plays the ball along ground and then progresses to get the goalkeeper into top hand save.

  • Goalkeeper starts behind the hurdle
  • Jumps into set position and performs footwork between the the cones
  • Into save at the end

NOTES:

  • To avoid queues when working with bigger groups of goalkeepers reduce the number of cones to do the footwork through.
  • Also have a group working in front and behind simultaneously

Side Jumps | Goalkeeping

Side Jumps:

Jump sideways over a hurdle, while holding a ball.

Touch the ball to the ground on each side.

Sitting Keeper | Goalkeeping

Sitting Keeper:

With the goalkeeper sitting on the floor, the ball is thrown to him for him to catch, and then thrown back.

Turn, React and Catch | Goalkeeping

Turn, React and Catch:

This drill works on your keeper's ability to turn and react.

Working with two feeders the keeper catches the first volleyed delivery and throws it back.

As soon as the first ball has been given back to the feeder the keeper must turn and prepare to catch the second volleyed delivery from the second feeder.

Drill continues in this way.
