Hockey: Round and Across

Coach's objective: To promote forward vision and awareness of space Purpose: To escape through the free gate Structure: Players work in threes. The receiver collects a pass from behind. As the pass is played, the defender moves from their starting cone through either of the gates in an attempt to tackle the receiver. The receiver must run through the unmarked gate with the ball under control

The defender runs through one of the two gates and attempts to tackle the ball carrier. The defender may only close down after the passer has rounded the cone. Purpose : To escape through one of the gates

- Passing and Receiving the ball on the 45 (degree) - Moving the ball into space - A feeder moves forward, passing the ball into a static forward - Defender must move around one of the flags and put pressure on the forward - Forward should move the ball into the space vacated by the defenders movement

One player stands in between the cones with 4 balls. He/she has to push the ball out of the area. Then call out a name of the player that has to fetch the ball, and run it back to the player between the cones.

Set up a V-shaped set of cones. Players dribble at an angle into the V and then perform a forehand chip hit to lift the ball over the cones. They then run around the cones to regain control of the ball and continue dribbling.

Ball each. Players have to run from gate to gate avoiding each other. Keeping the ball on the forehand (no reverse stick) and in contact with the stick at all time.

2 teams. Both teams have to try and take all the balls from their goal and put them in the other teams goal. Each team should only stay on their side of the line of cones (one ball per player at any time).

The player at the front of the queue passes to the player by the cones. They then dribble round the cones, shoot and the join the back of the queue. The player originally at the front of the queue then goes to stand by the cones and the exercise carries on in the same fashion.

- Performing the indian dribble while jogging

All the players with a ball must try and get from one side to the other without having their ball taken from them by the defender. If they are tackled then they also become a defender. None of the players are allowed on the islands (use cones to mark off these areas). The last player to be tackled is the winner.

Create lots of small and big islands with cones around a set area. Every player should have a ball except for 1 or 2 (depending on level of players and area) Players with the ball try to run from island to island without being caught by the catcher. The catcher is not allowed on the islands. Anybody caught goes to a prison island.

- Players work in pairs - Approximately 5 yard line - One player leads, the other follows - The leader must move the ball up and down the line, while the follower copies these movements

Players run around with their ball outside the islands (make the island shapes using a ring of cones). On the whistle, the players have to go and stand on one of the islands. Rules: no more than 2 players on any one island, last 2 out etc;

Ball each. Players have to run the shape of letters to spell a word i.e. their own name or their club name etc;

Players without a ball have to try and take the ball off a player with a ball.

Set out the practice as shown. Players are given a number from 1 to 4. No. 1s should stand behind the black cone. No. 2s behind the pink cone. No. 3s behind the red cone. No. 4s behind the yellow cone. On the coaches command the players dribble across to their colour cone on the opposite side.
