Golf: Clap and hold down

DESCRIPTION

To encourage the pupil to get into a correct grip routine and technique for chipping.
Pupils begin by holding their hands either side of the shaft and then clap the shaft with the palms facing one another. Slide the hand furthest from the target down, close the fingers with the thumbs pointing down the centre of the shaft, but ensure that the hands are still close together.

To encourage the pupil to maintain firm wrists throughout the stroke.
Encourage the pupil to prepare as normal for chipping, keeping the tee as close to their leading wrist as possible.

This should assist the pupil from preventing them from scooping the ball rather than using a descending low with the wrists firm.

Point The Way

To encourage the pupil to check the clubface aim.

Lay a club shaft, or other straight line, parallel to the aim line and encourage the pupil to check that the bottom leading edge is at right angles to the ball to target line (1). When setting up with the ball towards the rear of the stance, many pupils tend to have the blade open (2).

Drop the shaft

To encourage the pupil to address the ball in the correct position.

Encourage the pupil to prepare to hit the shot, then drop the club from their hands. The club should fall and hit the inside of the front thigh if the hands were positioned correctly in relation to the body.

'Spot On' Landings

To encourage the pupil to focus on their intending land point when chipping.

Place a circle of tees, hoop etc around one to two paces onto the green. Encourage the pupils to start by throwing the ball underarm to develop the feel for the required distance then move onto a chipping club and encourage the pupils to land in this circle and monitor how often they hit the land point and to the roll distance with created with various clubs.

Trick up the sleeve

To encourage the pupil to maintain firm wrists throughout the stroke. Encourage the pupil to prepare as normal for chipping then slide the remainder of the handle under the cuff of a sweater or hold firmly against the forearm, of the arm nearest to the target (1). When making the stroke this relationship should be maintained (2). Many pupils tend to use the wrists to attempt to ?scoop? the ball into the air rather than using a descending blow with the wrists firm. Be sure to explain to the pupils that this is a drill only and is illegal to use when playing.

Turn and point

To encourage the pupil to rotate their body correctly in order to maintain the extension of the arms in the forward swing. Encourage the pupil to point their arm furthest from the target at the ball with the arm nearest to the target behind their back. Make a half swing back and forwards holding the forward swing finish position for a few seconds to check that the arm points at the target, the weight is onto the forward leg, and the body has turned to face the target.

Umbrella

To encourage the players to develop a feel for correct weight distribution Place an umbrella or old club shaft in the ground next to the players leg that is nearest the target. The players should make the stroke keeping the hip and leg next to the umbrella / shaft . This should encourage steady weight distribution throughout the stroke.

Under the Bench

To encourage the pupil to imagine the correct action & technique for chipping Encourage the pupil to imagine that they need to hit the ball under an imaginary bench (1). This requires the correct preparation and action (e.g. downwards contact)
