Wimbledon arrives at the end of June and the grass court swing transforms how the game is played. Low bounces, slippery footing, and rewards for forward play demand a different tactical mindset. Here is how to coach it.
With Roland Garros centre stage in May, clay court tennis demands a different toolkit: controlled sliding, longer rallies, and patient point construction. Here is how to coach the surface that humbles power players and rewards craft.
The slice backhand is experiencing a renaissance in modern tennis, valued for its ability to change pace, create approach opportunities, and neutralise powerful opponents. This guide breaks down the technique, tactical applications, and training progressions coaches need to develop this essential shot at every level.

Red players are defenders. Black players are on ballers. Blue players are wingmen. Green players are forwards. Yellow players = Opposition
The Forward line players bunch up and have their opponents on the inside of them. Once the ball has been tapped down to the Rover by the Ruckman, the Forward line players push off their opponents leaving them all in a huddle and the forwards all burst out into the vacant space in the Forward line. The Centre is in front of the Ruckman and blocks/pushes his opponent away from the ball carrier. The Ruck Rover behind the Ruckman but is in front of his player and blocks/pushes his opponent away from the ball carrier. The Ruckman also shepherds his opposing Ruckman (after the tap) so that the ball carrier has a clear path to deliver the ball to the Left Forward Pocket. The Left Forward Flank doubles back as insurance for the Left Forward Pocket to crumb it (in this case as the mark is not taken). The Left Forward Flank then chips it over to the Full Forward who has held his lead but then has run back into the space directly in front of the goal. The Centre and the Ruckman can then choose which wing they might want to "fill the whole" in after the ball is in the forward line. The wingers push their players further out to the Wing and take off quickly to help form the wall across Half Forward or crumb for a Flanker who may be the recipient of the ball. The Half Back line pushes up one line.
