Piston

when is the piston best played?

Decision passing - Defenders move

DESCRIPTION
Based on the defender's movement player 4 should decide whether to pass to player 6, player 5 or not pass at all and take the shot on themselves. Blue player 1 starts with the ball and moves to make their defender follow them out of position, once they've dragged them outside they pass to player 2 who does the same and then passes to player 3 who passes to player 4. At this stage the game becomes 'live'. Blue 6 is stood between the two defenders and blue 5 is ready to make a run down the outside. Depending on the decisions made by the defence player 4 can pass early to player 6, throw the ball into the path of player 5 or simply go it alone and take the shot on themselves.

Hi Mugerwa,

In handball, the term "piston" usually refers to a specific attacking strategy or play where players move in a coordinated manner to create openings in the defense. The piston play is often employed in various offensive situations, and its effectiveness depends on the team's strategy, the opponent's defense, and the specific context of the game. Here are some scenarios in which the piston play might be effectively used:

Against a Flat Defense:

  • The piston play is particularly effective when facing a flat or zonal defense, where defenders are spread across the court.
  • Players in the piston movement can exploit gaps in the defense by creating quick and coordinated movements.

Fast Breaks:

  • The piston play can be employed during fast breaks when transitioning from defense to offense.
  • Quick and coordinated movements by the players can catch the opponent off guard and create scoring opportunities.

Wing Attacks:

  • When attacking from the wings, the piston play can help create space for the wing player to take a shot or make a penetrating run.
  • The piston movement can involve players from the backcourt and pivot positions, opening up passing lanes and creating confusion in the defense.

Penetrating the 6-Meter Zone:

  • In situations where the team wants to penetrate the 6-meter zone (near the goal area), the piston play can be used to create openings and draw defenders out of position.

Building from the Pivot:

  • Utilizing the pivot player as part of the piston movement can be effective in drawing defenders towards the center, creating space for shots from the backcourt or wing positions.

Late Attack in Set Plays:

  • During set plays or structured attacks, introducing the piston movement in the later stages of the play can surprise the defense.
  • This is effective when defenders are anticipating a specific pattern and are then caught off guard by the dynamic piston play.

Adaptation to Opponent's Style:

  • Coaches may choose to use the piston play based on their analysis of the opponent's defensive strengths and weaknesses.
  • If the opponent struggles with quick, coordinated movements, the piston play can exploit those vulnerabilities.

It's important to note that the success of the piston play depends on the players' understanding of the strategy, effective communication, and precise execution of movements. Coaches should tailor their approach based on the team's strengths and the specific challenges posed by the opposing defense. Regular practice and drills focusing on the piston play can enhance the team's ability to execute it effectively during games.
