playing a defence of 5_1

ANSWERS
Cam HughesCoach, England

Hi Nuwaha, The 5–1 defence in handball is an aggressive system designed to disrupt attacks early and force mistakes. Here’s how to play it effectively:

Structure:

  • 5 defenders stay compact near the 6-metre line.
  • 1 advanced defender pressures the ball around 9 metres.

Key Roles:

  • Advanced defender: pressures the playmaker, blocks passing lanes, forces play wide, and disrupts rhythm.
  • Back five: stay connected, slide together, protect the pivot, and step out to block shots before recovering.

Core Principles:

  • Constant communication
  • Compact spacing and quick side-to-side movement
  • Early pressure on shooters
  • Fast recovery if beaten

Best Used When:

  • Facing a strong central attacker
  • Looking to force turnovers and speed up the game

Common Errors

  • Isolated pressure from the advanced defender
  • Back line becoming passive
  • Gaps opening between defenders

All correct, but 5:1 can also be played defensively. All players help their neighbours and the mid center defender is responsible for the pivot's defense.
