DRILL TYPE: Learning to Rally
A fun drill to work on the children hitting and motor skills.
SETUP:
1. On the tennis court setup a hopscotch pattern using poly spots in front of the baseline at the center hash mark for the children to follow.
2. Place another poly spot on the center service line to show the children were to stand to hit.
3. The coach is on opposite side of the net with a basket of red are foam balls and facing the children.
MISSION:
1. One at a time, the children complete the pattern, run to the hitting spot, pick up a racket and hit a fed ball.
2. The coach will feed 2 balls for each child to trap or hit back over the net.
3. After they hit the ball they return to the line and the next child does the same.
PROGRESSION:
1. Setup some targets on the opposite side of the net and have them hit for points.
TIPS:
1. For younger children, the coach can be on the same side of the net with a teaching tee.
SAFETY:
1. Ensure players are well spread out.
2. Use only one racket.
