Short/Long Passing with Central Midfielder

The 'My Stuff' feature is amazing! It's a coach's best friend!
Thomas

DESCRIPTION

A modification of the standard Pass and follow drill with the addition of:

  • Central Midfielder who calls for the ball and looks to turn and move the ball
  • Making a long pass when receiving from the Central Player to develop a short long combination.

Players are looking to move the ball quickly with one or two touches (three is fine if the players are beginners).

Progressions:

  • Before receiving the ball players must call who they are passing to.
  • Limit the touches to one touch for all passes except the long pass
  • Add defenders one by one to the center

COACHING POINTS

  • Players should be quickly moving the ball after receiving.
  • Pass must be firm and accurate to the receiving player.
  • Short passes should remain on the ground
  • Central player should look to turn as they receive instead of stopping and then turning.
  • Emphasize the importance of the preparation before receiving the ball
