Transition Defense: Recovering Shape

Excellent site with easy to navigate pages.

DESCRIPTION

Drill for transition defense. Red starts with the ball at one of the three red cones and attacks the goal. Yellow holding mid challenges the ball to slow attack. Back four recover from offensive positions to defensive shape. Yellow must win the ball back and score in one the three little goals representing yellow's attacking outlets.

COACHING POINTS

-Defense: First stop/slow the attack by challenging ball and recover shape. Then force attack to outside and win the ball. Finally counter through holding mid and fullbacks.

-Can vary recovery shape by having fullback challenge the ball and having the holding mid cover the space behind.

-After you vary the ball starting place, center back should command who should pressure ball.
