Application of passing

DESCRIPTION

40x30yrds grid.
Teams of 4 (4xRed, 4xYellow, 4xBlue).
20mins for the technical, 20mins for the Possession Progression, 30mins SSG.
Playing area can be varied depending on the session objective and age group.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Technical (Diagram 1)

Each team passes and moves inside the playing area between its own coloured players. Emphasis on good quality ground passing.
This can be performed with sequential passing (i.e. number players off and player 1 passes to player 2, whos passes to player 3, etc)
Work on instep passing and also outside of the foot passing. First touch with the inside of the foot, or outside of the foot.

KEY COACHING POINTS:

  • Instep passes hit firmly at pace, unless requested otherwise.
  • Instep should be used half way up the ball or higher.
  • Observation of where the receiver wants the ball (i.e. into their run).
  • Weight of the pass.
  • Accuracy of the pass.
  • Communication between the passer and receiver. Also note the eye contact.
  • Create space to receive pass.

Control touch towards next target away from defenders (other players).
Awareness. Looking over the shoulder to asses space and a players first touch being ointo space.
Checking for space and movement to get free.
Movement off the ball to create space to receive a pass.
Discuss the principles of attack in the SSG.
