Area/Time: 80x70yrds (adjust as necessry) (30mins)

Diagram 1
ORGANISATION:

8x70yrd field split into 4 zones approximately 20yrds wide. Refer to diagram 1.
8vs8 ( 2GK)
Default formation = 3-3-2. The counter attacking team (Red above) can be set up in a 3-2-3 formation to encourgage more direct play if needed.
An assistant coach (or extra player) monitors the number of passes each team is using during each possession.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Both the teams play with a different set of rules.
The yellow team is limited to a certain amount of passes within designated zones on the field. Zone A = 4 passes maximum, Zone B = 3 passes maximum, Zone C = 2 passes maximum, Zone D = 1 pass maximum. They can take less touches in each zone also. Refer to diagram 2.
Require the build-up team to have all its players in the attacking half to score. This rule will help to create space behind the defensive line of this team to encourage good counter attacking opportunities.
The red team in limited to 5 passes total on each possession. Meaning to have a successful attack on goal they need to play direct and in a counter attacking style.
If a team violates one of these rules an indirect free-kick is awarded to the opposition.
Play for 30 mins (2x13mins 4 mins rest).
At half time the two teams change roles. (i.e. The Counter Attacking Team becomes the Build-Up team).

SCORING:

Score in the normal goals.

KEY COACHING POINTS:

Awareness to recognize opportunities for an effective counter attack. i.e. Space behind the oppositions defending line, numbers forward, build up team has committed many players forward, etc).
Countering team should play with a distinct style press hard in their attacking third to attempt to win possession high up the field. OR drop off and invite the opposition to play into their half before trying to intercept and then attack quickly using a counter attack.
The build-up team should spread the field using the full backs and wide players. Maintaining a 'half moon' shape withthe defending line to switch the play and maintain possession. They should remian composed and patient in their play choosing to go forward when appropriate using combinations and dribbling into space to attack.
Transtition speed is important to catch a team using a counter attack.

PROGRESSIONS

Each team can use both playing styles (i.e. build-up play and counter attacking) which they should choose depending on the situation and the positioning of the opposition on winning the ball back. Once the decision has been made they must then adhere to the rules of the style from above again (i.e. If a counter they have 5 passes).
Free play, but on transitioning looking to see which style of play the newly attacking team chooses
