Forwarda need to cover the field equally, but still also be covering every-other-phase. That may mean that the “2” have to sometimes pull in, but they should be able to reset into the general 2-4-2 once the ball goes out to the backs. Faster forwards belong on outsides of the field to keep up with wingers or break-aways, but also recognize when to come in and punch. This plan better utilizes forwards and allows to get in the back to extend or change up passing pace.
