DESCRIPTION

Aim: To develop basic tackle technique of the front-on tackle. Develop players’ awareness of safe tackle technique whilst developing confidence in contact.

Description:

  • This activity can be set-up multiple times to allow players lots of attempts - try to avoid long queues or players
  • In a small area - approx 10m x 10m, one attacker (with bag) and one defender
  • Attacker (with bag) aims to evade the defender
  • The deference aims to close down the space between them and the attackers, and make an effective tackle
  • In this video example, the tacklers have been instructed not to complete a tackle, only focus on placing their lead leg close to the attacker

COACHING POINTS

Progressions:

  • Widen / narrow grid to allow attacker more / less space to evade tackler. This makes it harder/ easier for the tackler to get close to attacker
  • Reduce length of grid to reduce the space between start and finish line of the ball carrier. Less space means the ball carriers speed is reduced
  • Remove the pad, and give the attackers a ball
