DESCRIPTION

Aim: Develop players’ ability to defend the ruck area

Description:

  • Set a small 15 x 10m area, with a 2m wide ruck area (two cones)
  • Start with a Guard and Shield (in tackle suites) either side of the ruck.
  • On the coaches signal, they tackle the oncoming player

 

 

COACHING POINTS

Progressions:

  • Add in an ‘A’ defender. On the coaches signal, the team of three (Guard, Shield and ‘A’) close down the space to tackle the ball carrier (in the video, this ball carrier is a tackle tube)
  • Bring both elements of the practice together
  • Shields can be taken away and a ball introduced
  • Can intoduce a scrum half to pass to 1st and second recivers
