Side step Alley

Great site and excellent drills. Easy to understand and apply in training....
Tyrone, Rugby Coach

DESCRIPTION

Place cones in a Y-shape with an alley for the ball carrier to run into.

Place a single cone in the mouth of the Y for the coach/tagger to stand by.

Runner enters "The Alley" with ball and runs at the centre cone/coach/tagger.

Coach shouts "Left/Right" and carrier then steps  and exits in that direction, ensuring enough space is kept to avoid being tagged.

The progression for this is to go from verbal Q's to the Coach raising their left/right arm and then, finally, stepping in either direction to force the runner to change direction and avoid tagging,

COACHING POINTS

  • Encourages player to engage in straight running
  • Encourages running directional changes
  • Enable players to assess body position of taggers and change direction accordingly
