Heather, Rugby Coach

DESCRIPTION

Breakdown the setup of a maul to specific roles. This gives each player an idea of the jobs to be done at different stages. This must then become a dynamic system with each player adapting as needed.

COACHING POINTS

  1. Ball carrier - low, good stance. Hit & turn, keeping ball in good position and close to body. Away from opposition where possible.
  2. 1st Support - seal off the ball. Make sure to use the OPPOSITE shoulder to the ball carrier and NO GAPS are left between players 1 & 2 and the ball.
  3.  Seal off - Iff possible drive through the gate and slip past the ball carriers remaining attached to the maul. This forms a tight low block around the ball
  4. Seal off as per 3 - work at the same time as 3
  5. Ball control - attach at back and transfer the ball to the rear of the maul. Make the ball secure but visible to the referee.
  6. And extra players - attach through gate but slip past the ball control player.

Weakness at the front communicated by front players, e.g. "Soft Centre". Drive & direction communicated from the back at ball control, e.g. "Short Steps, or Push Left", etc.

Deliver ball to scrum half while still moving forward!
