DESCRIPTION

Can they let the ball run across their body without touching it, in order to change the angle of their next pass?

Does their first touch allow them an immediate passing option (ideally) or do they require an extra touch?

Are passes played in front of players to run onto (if space allows), to their feet or behind them (not ideal)?

Do players instantly move to offer another supporting position or do they just admire their pass?

COACHING POINTS

  1. Supporting Position - They should adopt a position that is the correct angle and distance from the player in possession. There should be a clear passing channel between the 2 players and a realistic distance regarding the passing players ability.
  2. Body Shape - Ideally side on so that they can see as much of the area as possible. Their back should be to their nearest touchline.
  3. Get In Line - As the ball is travelling the receiving player should move to get in line with the ball and get as much of their body behind it as possible.
  4. Present the Surface - They should be presenting the appropriate body surface to the ball and making that area as large as possible. The surface presented will depend on the height and speed of the ball.
  5. Relax the Surface - On contact they should relax the surface so that it does not bounce away.
  6. End Product - Controlling the ball must be followed by a correctly executed pass, a poor pass will mean that the exercise breaks down.
  7. Communication - As there are many other players moving around inside the area it is crucial that each team member is communicating.
