Finishing With Headers and Volleys

DESCRIPTION

  • A coach on each side of the goal with a supply of footballs.
  • As the first player runs out he will call "head" or "volley" and the coaches will serve a high ball in front of the goal.
  • The players must try to connect with the ball using a volley or a header to score.

COACHING POINTS

Volley

  • Run at a pace you can control. Call for a head or a volley.
  • Take a quick glance at the goalkeeper to assess his position.
  • Keep your body in an open shape.
  • Attempt to strike through the ball with power.

Header

  • Assess the position of the keeper as quickly as you can and pick your spot.
  • Keep your eye on the ball.
  • Keep your mouth closed.
  • Head through the ball with your forehead. 
  • Use your elbows to help with balance and arch your back to develop more power.
