Small sided game focussing on defensive recovery runs. Attacking players look to retain possession under pressure and look to overlap/overload.
Ball is served from a GK to 3 attackers (A)
2 Defenders who start about the halfway line (D)
Recovery defender who starts on the opposite goal line and starts their recovery run as soon as the GK distributes the ball
The 3 attackers look to attack the 2 defenders as quickly as possible and try and score.
The 2 defenders must look to delay the attackers to buy time for the recovery defender to get back quickly and help out.
The two delay defenders should look to slow down the attackers but trying to force them to passthe ball, ideally square, sideways, backwards or wide
The two delay defenders should look to back off centrally and communicate with each other so that they compact the danger space behindthem
The recovery defenderwill need to recover as quickly as possible and in a straight line towards their own goal
As the ball is passed, the passing buys time for the defenders to get their defensive shape with all 3 defenders behind the ball.
The recovery player should recover to the danger space.
Again, if the ball can be safely won. The defenders should win it
If not, be disciplined, communicate, recover andkeep central and behind the ball. Don’t let the attackers run or pass behind them.
Once the defenders are all behind the ball and in a good defensive shape, they can be more aggressive with their defending.
If the defenders win or intercept the ball they can counter attack and attempt to score in the small goal. The Blue team now have to recover and defend the counter attack if possible.
